India builds a large share of the world's Shopify stores, for a straightforward reason: the same quality of work at roughly a third of the cost. The catch is a crowded market where quality varies wildly. Here is what we do, what it costs, and how to check anyone you shortlist.
Why so much Shopify work is built in India: comparable delivery quality at roughly a third to a half of US or UK agency rates, a deep pool of Liquid and JavaScript developers, and working hours that overlap both Europe and the US East Coast. That is the honest commercial reason, and it is a good one.
The risk is not capability. It is that the market is crowded and quality varies enormously, so the selection process matters more here than the price comparison.
| Build type | India | US / UK | Typical delta |
|---|---|---|---|
| Themed store | ₹60K – ₹2L | ₹3L – ₹8L | ~60% lower |
| Customised theme | ₹2L – ₹6L | ₹8L – ₹20L | ~65% lower |
| Custom theme | ₹6L – ₹15L | ₹20L – ₹50L | ~70% lower |
| Monthly retainer | ₹40K – ₹2L | ₹1.5L – ₹6L | ~60% lower |
Indicative 2026 ranges. The gap narrows at the enterprise end, where Plus experience is scarcer everywhere.
The five checks that separate the agencies delivering global work from the ones reselling it.
The subcontracting question is the important one. A meaningful share of agencies in this market win the client and pass the build to a third party, which is where communication and quality usually break down.

Freelancers charge roughly ₹800 to ₹2,500 an hour and agencies ₹1,200 to ₹3,500. A full themed store build typically lands between ₹60,000 and ₹2,00,000, and a custom theme between ₹6,00,000 and ₹15,00,000.
At the top of the market, yes, and a great deal of work for US and European brands is delivered from India. The variance is the issue rather than the ceiling. Check for in-house teams, Partner registration, live stores you can test and named references, and the quality question mostly resolves itself.
Commonly. Indian working hours overlap most of the European day and the US East Coast morning. Agree overlap hours in writing at the start, because that is the single most common source of friction on international projects.
