Local SEO for Multi-Location Businesses in India

How to rank in the map pack across several locations without cannibalising yourself, and the signals that actually move local rankings.

Local SEO for Multi-Location Businesses in India

Local search is a different game

Local SEO decides who appears in the map pack, and the ranking factors are not the same as organic. Proximity to the searcher, prominence and relevance dominate. You cannot change proximity, which is why the other two need work.

Google Business Profile is the main lever

For most local businesses, the profile matters more than the website. Get these right:

  • Primary category chosen precisely. This is one of the strongest signals available and people routinely pick something too broad.
  • Complete profile. Hours, attributes, services, description, and real photos updated regularly.
  • Reviews, consistently. Volume, recency and rating all count. A steady trickle beats a burst.
  • Reply to every review. Especially the negative ones, calmly and factually.
  • Products and services listed with descriptions, not left empty.

The multi-location problem

Businesses with several branches usually make one of two mistakes: a single page listing all locations, or near-identical pages for each that read as duplicates.

What works is a genuinely distinct page per location containing:

  • That branch's address, phone number and hours in text, not only in an image
  • LocalBusiness schema with the correct geo data
  • Staff, photos or details specific to that branch
  • Locality-relevant content: directions, parking, nearby landmarks
  • Its own Google Business Profile, linked to that page rather than the homepage

The test is simple. If you could swap the city name and the page would still make sense, it is not differentiated enough.

NAP consistency, still

Name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear: your site, Google, Bing, Justdial, industry directories, social profiles. Inconsistency creates doubt about which record is correct, and doubt suppresses prominence.

The common Indian complication is the same business listed with slightly different address formats across directories built over years. Auditing and correcting this is dull and reliably effective.

Getting reviews without breaking rules

Ask every satisfied customer, at the moment they are most satisfied. Automate the ask, ideally over WhatsApp a sensible interval after service, which we covered in WhatsApp automation flows.

Do not incentivise reviews, do not gate them so only happy customers can leave one, and do not buy them. All three are against Google's policies and all three are detectable.

What to measure

Map pack rankings vary by where the searcher is standing, so a single ranking number is misleading. Use grid-based local rank tracking to see performance across a radius, and watch profile actions: calls, direction requests and website clicks. Those are closer to revenue than position.

Local work sits inside our SEO, AEO and GEO service.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take?

Profile optimisation can produce movement within weeks, which is faster than organic SEO generally. Review velocity and citation consistency compound over several months.

Can I rank in a city where I have no address?

It is very difficult. Proximity is a major factor and Google requires a genuine presence. Service area businesses can define a radius, but ranking in a city with no real presence is not realistic.

Do I need a separate page for every location?

Yes, if you want each to rank. It must be genuinely differentiated, not a template with the city name swapped, or the pages compete with each other and none of them wins.
