How the map pack decides
Google's own explanation of local ranking comes down to three things: relevance (does this business match the search), distance (how close is it to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed is it). You cannot change distance. Everything else on this page is about relevance and prominence.
Setup essentials
A surprising number of profiles fail on basics. Check each of these:
| Field | Get it right | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Business name | Your real name, exactly as on your signage | Adding keywords like "Best Hair Transplant Gurgaon" to the name, which breaks guidelines and risks suspension |
| Primary category | The most specific match: Dermatologist, Hair salon, Medical clinic, Skin care clinic | A vague category like "Health" or the wrong specialty |
| Secondary categories | Other genuine services you offer | Adding categories for services you do not provide |
| Hours | Accurate, including holiday hours | Showing open when you are closed, which earns angry reviews |
| Booking link | A direct appointment link or WhatsApp | No way to book from the profile at all |
| Services | Each service listed with a short description | Left empty |
| Photos | Real exterior, interior, team and work | Stock images, or nothing added since launch |
Add UTM parameters to the website link on the profile so visits from it show up separately in GA4. Otherwise you will never know how much the profile is actually doing.
Keeping the profile active
A profile that was set up once and left alone slowly loses ground to competitors who touch theirs every week. The weekly routine is short:
- ✓Reply to every new review
- ✓Add a few new photos: the work, the team, the space
- ✓Publish an update or offer when there is something real to say
- ✓Check that hours, phone number and services are still correct
- ✓Watch for suggested edits from the public, which Google sometimes applies without asking
Reviews deserve their own system, which we cover in getting more Google reviews without breaking the rules.
Multiple branches
Chains need one profile per physical location, each verified and managed separately, each with its own phone number and its own landing page on the website. A single shared profile cannot rank in several neighbourhoods, and duplicate profiles for one address compete with each other and can be removed.
Doctors who practise at a clinic can also have individual practitioner profiles, which suits clinics where patients often search by doctor name. This needs managing carefully so practitioner and clinic profiles do not cannibalise each other. Our post on local SEO for multi-location businesses covers the website side.
Measuring what the profile does
The profile shows its own performance data: calls, direction requests, website clicks, bookings and the searches people used to find you. Check it monthly and compare against the same month last year, since clinic and salon demand is seasonal.
- ✓Calls are often the largest number for clinics, and the most under-counted, because nobody connects them to the profile.
- ✓Direction requests are a strong signal of real visits, especially for salons.
- ✓Website clicks become measurable in GA4 once the link carries UTM parameters.
- ✓Search terms show whether people find you by name or by service. Mostly name means your profile is not yet winning discovery searches.
If you use call tracking, Google allows a tracking number as the primary phone number with your main number listed as an additional number. That keeps measurement and your business details consistent, rather than creating conflicting numbers across the web.
Also fill in services and products with real descriptions and photos. They give Google more relevance signals for specific searches, and they give the searcher a reason to choose you without even visiting your website.
What gets profiles suspended
- ✓Keyword-stuffed business names
- ✓Virtual offices or addresses where the business does not actually serve customers
- ✓Several profiles for the same location
- ✓Frequent changes to the name, address or category in a short period
- ✓Review manipulation of any kind
Reinstatement is slow and sometimes requires video verification of the premises, so prevention is far cheaper than repair. This is a core part of how we market salons and aesthetic clinics, and it sits within our wider SEO practice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add keywords to my Google Business Profile name?
No. The name should match your real business name. Adding keywords breaks Google's guidelines and is a common reason for suspension.
What category should a skin clinic choose?
The most specific one that genuinely describes the business, such as Dermatologist or Skin care clinic, with other real services added as secondary categories.
Does each branch need its own profile?
Yes. Each physical location needs its own verified profile, phone number and matching landing page on the website.
How often should we update our profile?
Weekly is a good rhythm: reply to reviews, add photos, and check that hours and details are still accurate.
