The honest ranges
Anyone giving you a single number for website cost in India without asking questions is guessing. That said, here are the bands most legitimate work falls into.
| Type | Typical range | Sensible for |
|---|---|---|
| Template or theme build | ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000 | Early-stage businesses that need a credible presence quickly |
| Custom marketing website | ₹1,50,000 to ₹6,00,000 | Established brands where the site is a real sales channel |
| E-commerce build | ₹2,00,000 to ₹10,00,000 | Catalogue, payments, logistics and integrations |
| Web application or portal | ₹6,00,000 upwards | Custom logic, user accounts, dashboards |
These are build costs. They are not the whole cost, which is the part most quotes leave out.
What actually moves the number
- ✓Page count, but less than you think. Ten templates covering forty pages costs far less than forty bespoke layouts.
- ✓Integrations. Payment gateway, CRM, ERP, logistics. Each one is real work and each one is where timelines slip.
- ✓Content. Copywriting, photography and video are frequently excluded from the quote and then become your problem in week six.
- ✓Who edits it afterwards. A site your marketing team can update without a developer costs more to build and much less to run.
The costs nobody quotes
Budget for these separately, because they are real and recurring:
- ✓Hosting and domain, modest but ongoing
- ✓Maintenance, security patching and backups
- ✓Content and photography
- ✓Analytics and conversion tracking setup
- ✓The redesign you will want in three to four years
Why the cheapest quote usually costs more
A very low quote is normally one of three things: a template with your logo dropped in, a junior developer learning on your project, or a fixed price that assumes zero revisions and starts charging from the first change request. Any of those can be fine if you know that is what you are buying. The expensive version is discovering it in month three.
The genuine warning signs are a quote with no discovery questions, no mention of who owns the code, and no maintenance plan.
What to actually ask for
Ask any agency, including us, for these before you sign:
- 1Who owns the code and the accounts when we part ways?
- 2What is the performance target, and will you show me Core Web Vitals at handover?
- 3Can my team edit content without raising a ticket?
- 4What is explicitly out of scope?
Our approach to all four is on the web development page, and for stores specifically, the Shopify development page.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a website take to build in India?
A template build is typically two to four weeks. A custom marketing site is six to twelve weeks. E-commerce and web apps run longer. The most common cause of delay is content, not development.
Is WordPress cheaper than a custom build?
Usually to build, yes. Over several years the gap narrows once you account for plugin licences, maintenance and the performance work that heavy themes require.
Should I pay a monthly fee or a one-time cost?
One-time for the build, monthly for maintenance, is the normal structure. Be careful with monthly plans where you never own the site, because leaving means starting again.
